DHX - Breaking Alert

3/10/2022

Dear Valued Customer:

As you may be aware, oil prices have been on the rise since late December, when the potential for a war in Eastern Europe became news. Now that the war has commenced, prices have rapidly increased much further. Major indices show that bunker fuel oil prices have increased by as much as 50% since the end of last year.

Matson’s investment in exhaust gas cleaning systems, or “scrubbers,” for five of their ships deployed within their Hawaii service has mitigated these higher costs to some degree by allowing them to operate those vessels with lower-cost Heavy Fuel Oil while still achieving their emission reduction targets. However, Matson’s four newer vessels are engineered to run primarily on more refined and higher cost marine fuels.

Due to the recent sharp and sustained increase in all fuel prices, Matson will increase its fuel-related surcharge, effective Sunday, April 10, 2022. The surcharge for Hawaii service will increase from 38.5% to 46.0%; for Guam/CNMI service, it will increase from 39.5% to 47.0%; and for Micronesia service, it will increase from 43.5% to 51.0%.

In these extraordinary times, volatility in fuel prices is likely to continue and may require additional surcharge adjustments.

We will continue to monitor Matson's Fuel Surcharges and adjust our fuel surcharges to you accordingly.
