Breaking Alert

8/22/2018

Dear Valued Customer:

The following are updates regarding the current impact of Hurricane Lane.

Hurricane Lane strengthened overnight to a Category 5 hurricane, with strong wind gusts up to 160 mph and wave heights up to 42 feet. These conditions will impact arrival and departure times of the barge sailings within the Hawaiian Islands as well as sailings to and from the Mainland.

The hurricane is expected to move close to or over the Hawaiian Islands Thursday through Sunday. Each island and its residents could be slammed with heavy rain, flash flooding, and high surf. Accordingly, our island operations will be closed as local management determines appropriate, until roads are deemed safe and operable once again.

The Mahimahi V403w currently has an ETA into Honolulu Wednesday, August 22, 2018; however, the port may close per USCG Captain of the Port, leaving the Mahimahi out at sea until the storm passes. Additionally, delays will probably impact the Manoa 397 and Manulani 145 due to the storm as well.

ACTUAL AND PROJECTED PORT CLOSURES PER USCG CAPTAIN OF THE PORT:

  • Ports of Hilo and Kawaihae are closed.
  • Maui closed to inbound traffic at 1100 today and all traffic by 2300 tonight.
  • Honolulu closed to inbound traffic at 1100 today and closed to all traffic 1100 Thursday.
  • Kauai closed to inbound traffic at 1100 today and all traffic Thursday at 1100.

IMPACT TO MATSON’S SCHEDULE
  • Mahimahi V403w ETA 1600 Wednesday, 8/22 dockside Honolulu, but will likely be delayed due to port closure by USCG Captain of the Port. With the forward progress of the system slowed to 06 knots, closure of port may be delayed.
  • Neighbor Island barges scheduled for the end of the week are also likely to be delayed.
  • Winds in Honolulu are expected to increase to 35 - 45 knots on Thursday afternoon 8/23 and peak Friday morning, 8/24 with 50 - 65 knots. Winds will start to diminish on Saturday, 8/25 around mid-day to 25 - 35 knots.
  • These are all forecasts.

As the path of Hurricane Lane becomes more defined, we will update you as to what we determine will be service issues impacting our Inter-Island service, as well as our ocean forwarding services to each Island from the Mainland.
