USA Trucking Industry Update

The US trucking industry is experiencing an increased driver shortage as well as other factors critically disrupting operations and ability to meet current demand. Truckers in several regions are requiring an average of 2 weeks advance notice.

Factors affecting trucking services include:
  • New Electronic Log Device requirements
  • Decreasing availability of drivers
  • Winter weather in the Midwest, Ohio Valley, Southeast and Gulf
  • Record-breaking Import volumes
Most severely affected areas include:
  • New York
  • Wisconsin
  • Chicago/Illinois
  • Columbus/Ohio
  • Detroit
  • Savannah
  • Memphis
  • Houston
  • Florida
In an attempt to minimize delays in the supply chain, please consider taking proactive measures that include:
  • Placing bookings as far in advance of the desired departure as possible.
  • Submitting documents including original bills of lading as well as payment -as required- as soon as possible. We ask for a minimum of 48 hours prior to last free day at port or rail ramp. Some markets may require additional notification times due to truck power availability.
  • Provide flexibility in scheduling of pickup and delivery appointment dates/times. Truckers need longer notification times.
  • Clearing cargo at the port of discharge versus inland ramp location. This should allow additional lead-time in securing trucking services.
We will continue to monitor the situation and work on ensuring you obtain the levels of service you require and are accustomed to.
