In 2021, DHX-Dependable Hawaiian Express reached a milestone in sustainability with their tenth annual GreenWay Miles Carbon Audit. Their decade-long commitment to tracking emissions has allowed them to document a 78% reduction in same-facility emissions from their original audit in 2011.

When asked why DHX-Dependable Hawaiian Express decided to operate their warehouses on a carbon neutral basis, President Brad Dechter responded:

“Public awareness of greenhouse gas and its impact on climate change is accelerating,” explained Brad Dechter, President of DHX-Dependable Hawaiian Express. “Corporations that once had a single focus on delivering shareholder profits are starting to understand the critical need to also deliver a reduction in their carbon footprint.

All of DHX-Dependable Hawaiian Express’s larger facilities are solar powered, and we continue to invest in truck technology to reduce emissions. We’re proud of, but not complacent in our accomplishments these last ten years. We will continue to look for ways to not only reduce emissions, but also manage our entire environmental impact including waste management, clean water practices and recycling.”

2021 marks DHX-Dependable Hawaiian Express’ second year of purchasing carbon offsets* to provide customers carbon neutral warehouse operations. Last year, they operated five warehouses on a carbon natural basis: Rancho Dominguez, Maui, Guam, Kailua-Kona and Honolulu. This year they added and offset the newly acquired Seattle facility, and are baselining two other recently acquired facilities for their 2022 audit.

“Customers using our carbon neutral warehouses receive not only great service but the satisfaction of knowing that a portion of their supply chain has provided them with a reduced footprint. We are all stewards of our environment. Concern for the type of world we leave behind for our children and grandchildren requires a dedicated and on-going commitment to be as environmentally proactive with our operations as possible.”

The carbon audits of DHX-Dependable Hawaiian Express’s operations provide both a total company carbon footprint and individual facility footprints. Additionally, DHX-Dependable Hawaiian Express offers carbon neutral shipping. Their website provides a ‘per mile carbon calculator’, allowing shippers to calculate emissions associated with a single shipment or a year’s worth of tendered freight.

The freight business is complex to say the least, there are literally many moving parts. I feel that it is unreasonable to expect absolute perfection.
